So you want low competition keywords, right?
Sorry I lied!
You can’t find low competition keywords like a cakewalk. If finding keywords with low competition was easier, all the internet marketers would have been millionaires.
You need to rack your brain, invest hell lot of time and analyze a lot of websites to get a hold of profitable low competition keywords.
Here, I am going to reveal some methods so that you won’t wander to have an answer for how to find low competition keywords anymore.
How to Find Low Competition Keywords With High Traffic
If you ask me what process in blogging takes most of my time, I will say keyword research. In order to drive decent page views to your blog, you must invest time figuring out keywords, that suit you.
Are you waiting for automated way to mine keywords? Then, you need to be disappointed here as I want you to use your brain for the process.
Below, you can find the step-by-step process of finding low competition long tail keywords.
#1. Find Keywords regardless of the Competition
First, you need to collect profitable keywords. Then only, we can determine their competitiveness.
If you are looking for a free way, I can’t help but recommend Google’s Keyword Planner because it is the best free keyword research tool.
You need a seed keyword to plug into the tool, so that it will unveil related keywords with high search volume. In case you want to get more keywords a webpage rank for, landing page field helps you out.
Just visit keyword planner, sign into your account and select ‘Search for new keywords using a phrase, website or category’.
Then, put your seed keyword under ‘your product or service’. And, enter the address of a page ranking for that particular keyword to uncover more profitable search phrases that particular web page ranks for. You can also enable geographic filters there.
I have just inserted a keyword and a webpage. Click get ideas and Keyword ideas tab from the following page.
The above image is the result of my quick research. You can sort the result on the decreasing order of search volume with a single click on Avg. Monthly Searches. And, collect the keywords from there, which suits your seed keyword.
Don’t do: You can spot a column called Competition, can’t you? Do you think it indicates the keyword competitiveness? Wrong! It doesn’t! That column is only for the Adwords users, not for us.
What if you don’t get any seed keyword to plug into?
I would go for SEMRush then. (Unfortunately, SEMRush is a paid tool and you can purchase it from any group buy sites for cheaper price).
SEMRush is the best to spy on competitors. Whenever I am running in short of keywords, I put a website URL into it and grab their top keywords.
Checkout BuzzSumo Review & Most Viral Content on Social Media (BuzzSumo is a Content Discovery Tool).
The above given result is what I got for backlinko.com. Make sure you don’t put sites with more authority than yours for it will become hard to beat them.
N.B. : Tons of keyword research tools are available. The point here is to collect more and more keywords with at least 1000-1500 search volume.
#2. Determine the Keyword Competitiveness
Now that you have a list of keywords, It’s time to determine the keyword difficulty.
You can calculate the keyword competitiveness using tools and manual method. I recommend going with the manual way only.
What you will do here is search for the keyword you find and analyze the results that pop out.
We will check the following matrices of each result in order to know how to find out low competition keywords.
- PA (Page Authority)
- DA (Domain Authority)
- RD (Reffering Domains)
- Anchor Texts
- On-page Optimization
And we also need to check whether a weak site is ranking or not.
N.B. : You need Moz bar here in order to get the insight of PA and DA real time. Don’t forget to enable the bar.
Step 1: Search on Google and Find PA, DA
Take one keyword from the collection you have made. Then, enter it into Google search box.
If your Moz bar is enabled, you can see the analytics just below each result as seen in the image. And, you got the PA, DA details. (If you are a Moz pro customer, you will not see that lock icon dedicated for domain analysis).
The higher the PA and DA, the greater the keyword competitiveness will be.
Step 2: Check Referring Domains and Anchor Texts
Clicking on the Links right to PA leads you to a page like below image.
Now you will get how authoritative the referring sites are. And, the result features the Anchor texts of each link as well. (I recommend using Ahrefs for backlink analysis as it has the accurate link profile database than Moz’s). If it has links from low quality directories and spammy sites, the chances are higher for you to outrank them.
Check whether their Anchor texts are SEO optimized. In this case, it can be survival knife, best survival knives, top survival knives etc. (See you can grab more keywords here as well). In case the anchor texts are a name or some other unrelated phrases, your chances keep on rising.
Step 3: On-page SEO Analysis
Do you know on-page SEO alone can rank your site for a medium competitive keyword? That’s why it’s important to analyze the same.
First, open a ranking page and click on the magnifying glass icon on the Moz bar.
Scrolling down to the bottom of the Moz details will give you h1, h2, bold and italicized texts. Using this deep analysis, you can figure out how keywords are spread throughout the article. Check whether the content includes long tail and LSI keywords. If it doesn’t, outranking possibility takes the peak.
Step 4: Checking the Availability of Weak Sites
Here you are, on the final step of how to find low competition keywords guide. Now, you need to find out whether any weak site (wordpress.com, blogspot, ehow etc.) are ranking or not.

If there are weak sites, you can rank too with righteous SEO strategy.
Bonus: How to Find Low Competitive Long Tail Keywords
In terms of the number of words, keywords can be divided into two; short tail keywords and long tail keywords. And the short tail keywords are not easy to rank because they have been taken care of established sites to dominate on SERPs.
Long tail keywords, The money for all of us lies there.
The competition is less, and rank-ability is high if you write articles targeting long tail keywords.

Once you enter a keyword, it will ask you to sign into Keyword Planner and authorize the usage. Don’t hesitate to do it right away.
Step 3:
Wait a few seconds to see the keywords that keep on appearing on your screen. Alongside the keywords, details like CPC, search volume (global), local searches, KC (keyword completion) and advertiser competition are displayed.
See, everything in one window! Isn’t this awesome?
Step 4:
Long Tail Pro allows you to analyze the competitors individually by accessing the “Competitor Analysis” tab.
N.B. : Long Tail Pro uses Keyword Planner to get search volume, CPC and advertiser competition. The tool has their own algorithm to calculate competition that included PA, DA, and other site metrics. You can try their product in just $1 for 10 days.
It may take hours to do keyword analysis and research manually. And, you can’t analyze link profile fully as well. But here, you will get the keyword competitiveness directly that you will not need the backlink report.
